Nobody warns you about this one. You go in thinking it's just a fire and some chairs. You come out of it a slightly different traveler.
There's always a guitar, and it's never being played well, and somehow nobody minds. Someone always has one. They're not great. They know maybe four chords and two full songs. Doesn't matter. By the third song, half the group is humming along anyway.
You end up talking to someone you'll travel with for the next three cities. It's never planned. You just end up next to the same person for twenty minutes, the conversation doesn't die, and by the end of the night you've unofficially agreed to catch the same bus out.
The conversations get weirdly deep, weirdly fast. Something about firelight and strangers makes people skip the small talk. Twenty minutes in and someone's telling you about quitting their job, or the breakup that started this trip, or the thing they're actually scared of. Nobody planned this. It just happens.
You realize you don't know anyone's last name, and it genuinely doesn't matter. First names, home countries, maybe what they do for work. That's it. That's the whole profile. And somehow that's enough to feel like you actually know them.
Someone starts a game nobody agreed to play, and everyone plays anyway. Never have I ever, some card game half the group is teaching the other half, a debate about which country has the best food that gets way more heated than it should. Nobody remembers whose idea it was.
The fire dies down and nobody wants to be the one who leaves first. There's a stretch near the end where the flames are basically embers, it's cold, everyone should go to bed, and yet the group just... stays. Talking softer now. Nobody wants to break it first.
The next morning, there's a group chat. It starts with someone posting a blurry photo from the night before. Then "wya" from someone who's already found breakfast. Somehow this group chat outlives the trip.
This is the part of backpacking that doesn't show up in photos. It's not the view, it's not the trek, it's not the hostel itself. It's twenty strangers around a fire who had nothing in common that morning and somehow have plans together by the next one.
That's kind of the whole point.
